About Sports City
The King Abdullah Sports City (KASC) is an innovative and cutting edge landmark that represents Saudi Arabia’s ambitious move towards athletic excellence. Located about 50 km north of Jeddah, it is an international venue with world class facilities to inspire Saudi Arabian citizens to participate in sports. The Sports City an investment in sport, rather than architecture — a facility designed to grow with the sports community. At the centre of the project is the Kingdom’s first purpose-built, FIFA standard football venue — with a capacity of 60,000, including a royal box, it will be home to Jeddah’s two Premier League clubs, Al-Ittihad FC and Al-Ahli SC.
The sports city also contains a Masjid, an indoor sports area with a capacity for over 10,000 spectators, and a host of other facilities including an auditorium, tennis courts and an outdoor athletics stadium. This is the stage on which current and future top athletes will shine.
The design of the KASC embraces both contemporary and historic architecture and structure — running around the stadium is a ribbon of bracing and tie-down V-frames, which echo the mashrabiya screens of traditional Arabic and Islamic design.
The stadium’s bulbous outline is like a jewel rising out of the sand. Not only is it a striking and iconic addition to the Jeddah skyline, it is a pillar of engineering excellence. A role model for environmental and economic sustainability — advanced technology is imbued into the structure, from the grass on the pitch to the roof.
