Inauguration

The inauguration of KASC took place on May 1st 2014, as the new sports city hosted the King Abdullah Cup final between Jeddah and Riyadh clubs Al-Ahli and Al-Shabab, which finished 3-0 to Al Shabab. Almost 100,000 spectators watched the event which included the inaugural ceremony — co-ordinated by ECA2, it was an impressive, 360° spectacle of lights, sound, fireworks, and technology.

The opening ceremony also included traditional dances, a performance by singer Abdul Majeed Abdullah, colourful pyrotechnics, and amazing laser shows. The opening ceremony also included traditional dances, a performance by singer Abdul Majeed Abdullah, colourful pyrotechnics, and amazing laser shows.

The pinnacle of the inauguration ceremony was when a 10-year old boy holding an illuminated football-shaped orb was lifted by wire to the royal gallery, where he passed the orb to King Abdullah. The Saudi ruler thanked the boy and made a short speech.
